Mark Surrell
Headmaster / Science & Philosophy Teacher
Mr. Surrell joined the Holy Name family as the first Headmaster of Holy Name High School – A Chesterton Academy. He is a U.P. native from Marquette. He has Bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Philosophy from Northern Michigan University and a Master’s degree in Political Science from Hillsdale College. At the Academy Mr. Surrell teaches Science and Philosophy in addition to his administrative duties. He and his wife Samantha have two children with another on the way. In his spare time he enjoys exercise, reading and spending time with family. Mr. Surrell says he “loves the beautiful curriculum of the Academy. Our students learn about truly meaningful things; it’s a kind of liberal arts education that nourishes the mind, refines the character, and elevates the soul.”

Anne Carlson
Latin
Salve! Mrs. Anne Carlson graduated from Alma College with a B.A. in Elementary Education with Minors in Science and Spanish. After graduating she taught 1st-12th grade Spanish at her own Alma mater, Gaylord St. Mary’s Cathedral School, before moving to Escanaba in 2008. Anne taught Latin to several home school families in the area for over ten years and was asked to help begin the Latin program at Holy Name Catholic School in 2016. She was blessed to study Latin herself throughout high school and loves to challenge her students’ minds to go excelsior – ever higher, and immerse them in the beauty of the official language of the Church, Latin. In her free time, she enjoys reading, playing sports and embarking on adventurous excursions with her husband (and boss) Joe Carlson and her five young children.
